2nd Lesson Reflection Phase 2

Instructional Decisions/Teaching (InTask Standard # 9):
During the lesson, the overall learning went really well. Not only would it actually work for second graders but while teaching it to my classmates they also learned how to do an effective lesson on measurement. What did not go well was the fact that there was too much student choice. It confused my classmates so I can only assume it would confuse second graders even further. The alignment of objectives and standards was very well maintained. The students compared the length of objects based on the different measurement tools they used and then came to realize the difference between centimeters and inches. I only made one modification during the lesson, I originally was going to have the students use cubes and paper clips to measure items but I could not get ahold of that man paper clips so I had them choose an object of their own to use to measure with; which they both chose their phone to measure things with.

Mechanics:
The technologies used were the tablets for the application Pixie. The students used this to take notes and document their understanding of how an object can have a different length based on the unit of measurement. The computers were used by the students to play measurement definition games. As the teacher, I also used the computer for the emails the students sent me from their Pixie notes. My lesson was was in the perfect time frame this time. It was maybe two minutes short but we used that time to clean up our mess.

Assessment of Learning (InTask Standard # 6):

Based on the assessment, the students fully grasped the concept I was trying to teach. I wanted them to understand that while measuring something, it depends what you measure it with. They compared objects with cubes and their phones to measure things like water bottles and coffee cups. Overall, the lesson was a success. From the feedback surgery, the students had a fun and interactive time learning the material. Of course there were things that could have been changed such as not having so much student choice so I can have a better grasp on who is learning the material and who it not.

What did you learn from designing and teaching this lesson and how will you use this in the creation of future lessons/learning activities.
Fro designing and teaching this lesson I learned that you may have a plan and think things will go smoothly but you have to plan for errors and modifications as well. I am glad the learning objective was accomplished but there needed to be more structure in the lesson directions. Next time I create a lesson I will try to still have student choice but also make sure I will be able to have control over the situation.

  1. I like that you are thinking about the idea of how to relinquish control, yet continue to manage the class. This is not an easy dynamic. It takes time and practice to get it right.
