2nd Lesson Reflection One

Assessing Prior Knowledge and Planning Instruction
Prior to this lesson, students need to have learned that objects have sizes. As a class we would have already learned that depending on what we measure the object with, we will get a different amount. The prior knowledge an experiences will be assessed by doing a review of how objects can be different lengths by using paper clips and cubes to measure things that we will be later measuring with inches and centimeters. In the planning process, I will use this information to assure that students grasp the overall concept of length and size and how it differs. The content of this lesson should be taught at this grade level because it is in the state standards making it appropriate for this age group. The objectives align with the standards because both include understanding and comparing two measurement units for the same object and seeing how it is a different amount. The lesson will be taught towards the beginning of the year because we will be building off things the students learned in first grade and will need this information to do future things in the second grade.

Designing Instruction (InTask Standards 7 and 8):
I am using the instructional methods I have described because it provides a hands on experience that will benefit all types of learning. Instead of me just telling my students something, they are going to experience it themselves and learn it that way. The instructional methods align with what I know about best practices because I know there are multiple intelligences and every student learns better using a different one. I will admit that I favor the bodily-kinesthetic one the most, which is why most of my lessons are getting the kids involved and them being interactive with the material. I am engaging students in creative and higher order thinking by them being able to choose what objects they will be measuring and by them basically coming up with questions on their own that they are subconsciously answering.

Planning Assessment (InTask Standard 6):
The assessment aligns with the standards and objectives of this lesson because I am checking for the understanding of an object having different measurement numbers from using different units. I am doing this by using an app that provides the opportunities to show me this by pictures, words, and voice memos. The assessment demonstrates that the students have been successful in the learning content because they have to answer the match it definition computer game with an 85% or better. The assessment demonstrates student engagement in higher order thinking because they are the ones taking notes and answering questions that they have created themselves with no outline of what I am looking for. This also shows that the individual needs of students were met because everyone is working at their own pace with or without the help or other students.

How does your lesson meet each of the ISTE NETs Standards?
My lesson facilitates and inspires student learning and creativity because they could be doing a simple worksheet showing the at an object has a different numerical length depending on the measurement unit, but they are not. They get to use variables to determine the objects of their choice length. My lesson provides digital age learning experiences and assessments by the students and I using the Pixie app. They can take down their notes and proof using the app and then I can go back and look over them with ease. My lesson models digital age work and learning because this is a learning exercise that could simply be done by using a paper a pencil. We are using iPads and computers to make it more appealing and helpful. My lesson promotes and models digital citizenship and responsibility by not being easily side tracked during the technology uses. They are to use one app and one internet website that I have provided for them. This part of the activity is not a choice so there should be no need to be doing other things while using the iPad or computer. Both the app and website are extremely kid friendly. Since the lesson is 'go at your own pace', children with diverse needs can work freely and take their time learning the material. Math is a culture and global topic, especially measurement. Not all cultures and parts of the world use the same measurement units but the concept is still the same.
